Hancock Park is a historic and affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles.
The geographic boundaries for Hancock Park are Rossmore Avenue to the East, Melrose Ave to the North, Highland Ave to the West, and Wilshire Blvd to the South.
The Hancock family developed Hancock Park in the 1920's. It was named after its developer G. Alan Hancock. The Hancock Family became wealthy drilling for oil on the acreage around the La Brea Tar Pits. They had 71 active oil wells between 1905 and 1910. Hancock then subdivided residential lots and leased 105 acres for the land that became the Wilshire Country Club (established in 1919).
As opposed to many neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Hancock Park houses are set well back from the street, most power and telephone lines are buried, and fences are strongly discouraged.
